Bringing It All Together

Introducing the sports day idea

Explain to the children that in a few days time the group is going to hold a sports day. Remind the children of the work they have already done about sports days, and encourage them to contribute their ideas about what such an event might involve.

Explain to the children that on their sports day, everyone is going to have a go at several activities, and everyone is going to be a winner!

During the sports day the children move around a circuit of small activities. Each one is a challenge of skill.

Suggested ideas include:

The rope maze Fold a very long skipping rope or washing line in half and lay it on the ground in such a way as to make a track which can be followed by children. Older children could be asked to roll a ball along the maze.

The balancing rope This activity again starts with a rope laid on the ground, but this rope is used to form a single straight line. The children’s challenge is to walk along the rope with feet at all times touching the rope. The skill is to keep the feet straight in front of each other, in what is essentially a balancing activity.

Target throwing Make a simple target throwing challenge, such as throwing a bean bag into a bucket from a short distance.

The obstacle course Make a mini obstacle course including, for example, hoops to climb through, stepping stones to cross, a held rope to crawl under and a plank on the ground to walk along.

Skittles Use bought skittles, or make your own using washing-up liquid or plastic soft drinks bottles which can be decorated and slightly weighted.

The ball rolling slalom Make a short slalom course by placing half a dozen cones in a spaced row. Children roll the ball in and out of the cones. This can be adapted as a steering activity if your group has ride-on toys.
